Antique Engagement Ring Facts

By Gail Leino

Selecting an antique engagement ring may be the most thrilling jewelry purchase a couple will ever make together. Purchasing an antique engagement ring can add special meaning and be an even greater investment than standard market fare. The differences between contemporary and antique jewelry can include a host of elements.

The antique diamond was hand cut and may be cut in styles that are no longer in common usage. The old mine cut and the cushion cut were popular more than a century ago and were designed to catch candle light in a dazzling way that new diamond cuts do not. These diamond cuts may make a candlelight dinner more romantic than would a new diamond cut which only shows off in harsh electric lights. Rose, Abraham Asscher and emerald cut diamonds are also found in antique engagement rings.

Although any ring produced before 1950 can be considered to be an antique, there are five main time periods commonly represented in the antique engagement ring market. The Georgian period (1760-1837), the Victorian period (1835-1900), the Art Nouveau period (1890-1919), the Art Deco period (1920-1935) and the Art Retro period (1930-1950) are all available in the antique jewelry market. Each of these time periods is characterized by its own unique design elements.

As with any antique only an appraiser can authenticate the age of antique engagement rings and the buyer should beware of contemporary merchandise which may have been misrepresented and only has vintage styling. While still valuable in terms of metals and gemstones these vintage styled pieces may not have the same values as the antique engagement ring.

Antique Jewelry

By Alison Cole

If you are fond of vintage items, you dont have to depend entirely on your ancestors to acquire a few of these heirlooms. Heirloom-quality jewelry from the Victorian, Edwardian, art deco and other periods is now readily available. When you wish to gift a rare piece of jewelry to your beloved, choose a unique vintage item that she will preserve for the rest of her life. Antique jewelry, a term applied to jewelry over a hundred years old, is now a favorite with the prospective brides, too. With everything that is old now coming back into fashion, most brides walking down the aisle are adorning vintage jewelry with pride.

Among the jewelry pieces that you can pick up are antique engagement rings, studded necklaces, bracelets, brooches, crosses, pendants, lockets and other extraordinary pieces of timeless art and beauty.

These antique jewelry pieces come to you through antique jewelry auctions, fairs and sales that are frequented by the jewelers to bring you pieces of extraordinary charm and elegance. Some of the jewelers also specify the age of the antique jewelry on display. For instance, some may claim to keep pieces from 1900 to 1950 (Edwardian, art deco and retro jewelry), and some may have heirloom pieces that are at least two centuries old (late Georgian or Victorian jewelry)!

Shopping for antique jewelry has an added advantage. It acquaints you to the history and culture of the era to which it belongs. You would be interested to know how the fashion of wearing delicate dresses in the Georgian era favored the use of small, light jewelry. Pendants with miniature paintings of loved ones were also prevalent in the late-Georgian era. In a similar way, jewelry belonging to each era is a reflection of the changing fashions. So, with every piece of antique jewelry, you also buy memories of a long lost era.

Original hardware is almost always important to the value of antique furniture. In fact, sometimes the hardware--even badly broken--is more valuable than the furniture that it is on. Be sure not to damage the furniture or the hardware if you remove it.

A badly worn or discolored varnish should probably be removed. But, if the finish is shellac, it should be restored or left "as is," never stripped or replaced. If you aren't sure which is on your antique table or desk, find out before you touch it with a stripper.

Sized at 7.5M, these vintage high-heeled black shoes are in good condition and have great style. The large fake jewels are all present, and are individually sewn onto the shoes over a metallic, gold leather design. I had the caps on the bottoms of the high heels replaced by a local shoe cobbler.
